View SpecificationsHow Horizontal Flow Wrapping Technology Works
High-speed horizontal flow wrapping is a precise mechanical choreography of continuous product conveying, film roll dynamic unwind, longitudinal bottom-fin sealing, and rotary/box-motion cross sealing.
Servo Infeed & Pitch Synchronization
Products are conveyed along a linear track via smart lug chains or non-contact smart belt systems. Optical sensors read item dimensions in real time, synchronizing the servo drive to inject items into the formed film tube at exact phase intervals without product-seal overlap.
Adjustable Former & Film Unwind
Flexible film rolls (BOPP, laminated barrier foil, paper-poly, or mono-recyclable PE) pass over precision dancer arms and optical registration sensors. The film wraps around an engineered folding box, creating a continuous tubular sleeve around the advancing product.
Longitudinal Fin-Sealing Wheels
Two to three pairs of heated fin-seal rollers pull the film edges together beneath the package. The first pair advances the film, the second applies precision PID temperature and compressive pressure to create a hermetic longitudinal seam, and the third trims excess waste film.
Rotary vs. Box-Motion Cross Cut
For ultra-high speeds up to 600 packs/min, continuous rotary cutting jaws crimp and separate packs instantly. For thick laminated films, MAP gas flushing, or tall profile goods, D-cam box-motion jaws extend seal contact time to create leak-proof hermetic barriers.
Gas Flushing (MAP) Preservation
Integrated nitrogen ($N_2$) and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) gas injectors displace atmospheric oxygen from the interior packaging tube prior to cross sealing. Residual oxygen levels are held below 0.5%, significantly prolonging shelf life for baked goods and perishables.
Vision Inspection & Auto-Rejection
Inline industrial optical cameras evaluate barcode readability, seal contamination, and print date clarity. Non-conforming packages are expelled at full line speed via pneumatic blowers or paddle arms without halting upstream feeding channels.
Horizontal Flow Wrapper (HFFS) vs. Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS)
Selecting the ideal automated packaging configuration requires an understanding of structural differences, feeding mechanics, packaging speeds, and material suitability.
| Technical Parameter | Horizontal Flow Wrapper (HFFS) | Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Product Suitability | Solid, discrete, uniform or fragile items (biscuits, bread, chocolate bars, face masks, wet wipes, soap, medical syringes, hardware). | Loose bulk granules, powders, free-flowing liquids, snacks, nuts, frozen poultry, and pellets. |
| Conveying & Feeding Vector | Horizontal linear plane; gentle product handling prevents impact damage, shattering, or tumbling. | Vertical gravity drop; relies on free-fall velocity directly from weighers into vertical pouches. |
| Maximum Linear Speeds | Up to 600+ packages/minute via multi-jaw rotary servo cutters. | 60 to 180 packages/minute per single vertical tube (depending on product drop time). |
| Pouch Aesthetic & Tightness | Skin-tight contour wrapping with flat bottom-fin seal and crisp end-crimps. | Pillow pouches, gusseted bags, quad-seal bags, and stand-up block bottoms with looser fill. |
| Gas Flushing Efficiency (MAP) | Continuous laminar gas injection along linear tube; residual $O_2$ < 0.5%. | Vertical gas lance flushing inside tube; residual $O_2$ typically 1.0% – 2.5%. |
| Footprint & Factory Space | Elongated horizontal footprint (4m to 8m length depending on infeed collation belts). | Compact floor footprint, but requires substantial vertical ceiling height (3m to 6m). |

Expert Insights on Horizontal Packaging Machines
Find clear answers to key technical, operational, and procurement queries regarding our horizontal flow wrapping and high-speed packaging machinery.
What types of flexible packaging films can be processed on your horizontal flow wrappers?
Our horizontal flow wrapping machines are engineered to process a broad range of flexible webs, including heat-sealable BOPP, OPP, laminated Aluminum foil (PET/AL/PE), paper-poly laminates, cold-seal films for temperature-sensitive chocolates, and newly emerging recyclable mono-material Polyethylene (PE) or Polypropylene (PP) films with tailored heat-dwell controls.
How fast can Ludyway horizontal packaging machines operate?
Production speeds range from 50 to 600 packages per minute depending on product dimensions, film characteristics, and infeed mechanics. Single-jaw rotary systems typically achieve 120–200 packs/min, while multi-jaw continuous rotary configurations for biscuits or confectionery comfortably achieve 400–600 packs/min.
What is the difference between rotary jaw and box-motion end sealing?
Rotary cutting jaws rotate continuously on an axis, making them ideal for high-speed applications with standard thin films. Box-motion jaws travel horizontally with the package in a rectangular motion, providing significantly longer heat-seal dwell times. Box-motion is preferred for heavy barrier foils, thick laminates, and modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) where airtight hermetic seals are critical.
Can one horizontal flow wrapper accommodate multiple product sizes?
Yes. Our horizontal flow wrappers are built with tool-less quick-change features, including adjustable forming boxes, variable pitch infeed pushers, and recipe storage via the touchscreen HMI. Standard size changeovers typically require less than 10–15 minutes, minimizing operational downtime between packaging batches.
